The Benefits of Brahman Cattle: 5 Reasons Why You Should Own this Breed

Moreno Ranches is a top producer of Brahman cattle in Texas and Florida. We offer red and grey Brahman bulls and females that have a variety of benefits that make this breed stand out amongst others. The following information is sourced from the American Brahman Breeder Association.

SUPERIOR CROSSBREEDING

Hybrid vigor is a genetics term that is achieved by crossing two different strains, breeds or species. The use of Brahman bulls with European or English bred cows is one of the most popular crossbreeding practices in the U.S., with the resulting Brahman F-1 calf in high demand by cattlemen. The Brahman F-1 cross is superior to other crosses in weight per day of age and carcass efficiency. They also have characteristics of the Brahman parent, which include heat tolerance, disease and parasite resistance and increased longevity.

MATERNAL BENEFITS

F-1 Brahman females have increased milk production, higher fertility and wean faster-growing calves with fewer inputs. These females also have a longer productive life and raise more calves over their lifetime than other breeds.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRENGTHS

Brahman cattle can have darker skin pigmentation and a thick, glossy hair coat, which helps filter the rays of the sun and withstand extreme temperatures. Brahman cattle also have the ability to utilize lower-quality feed and to resist insects and external parasites while withstanding vast climactic differences. Another special feature of the Brahman bred is their ability to sweat freely, which contributes to their great heat tolerance.

GAIN EFFICIENCY & CARCASS QUALITY

Brahman hybrid calves and Brahman F-1 cows are known for their fast gains. Calves produce more weight per day of age than most other breed contemporaries. The carcasses are also known for their high cutability, which results in high yielding carcass with limited fat.

MILK PRODUCTION

Many dairy producers in the southern U.S. and South and Central America utilize the American Brahman in crossbreeding with dairy breeds. Using American Brahman adds additional butter fat content and protein, as well as increased production and net income.

Moreno Ranches congratulates Ryan Beany as 2020-2021 President of the American Junior Brahman Association

(Riesel, Texas – July 28) Moreno Ranches congratulates Ryan Beany for becoming the new 2020-2021 President of the American Junior Brahman Association.

Kelvin Moreno, head of Moreno Ranches, said he is very proud of Beany and knows he will do great things as President of the American Junior Brahman Association.

“Beany is a dedicated and hardworking young man,” Moreno said. “I’m excited to see what he does in the future with the Brahman breed.”

Beany got his start showing English cattle in his county fair when he was 8 years old. When he started getting older, he had the desire to work with a mainstream American breed.

“I saw Brahman cattle and I really liked how identifiable they were because of their hump and ears,” Beany said. “I went to one of the Florida Brahman Association Field Days and met Mr. Kelvin Moreno, who let me showcase my first Brahman and Mcheck bull that year. After that, it was history.”

Beany said after that year, he started getting more of his own cattle and becoming more involved with the AJBA. Beany worked his way up in the organization from director to vice-president, and now to president.

“As president, I really want to connect the officer team and the membership a lot more through e-newsletters, vlogging, and a larger social media presence,” Beany said. “I also want to ensure that this is an amazing time for the Juniors to have fun, make friends and build a life long passion for the Brahman breed.”

Moreno added that he finds it rewarding to see Juniors like Beany get a start in the Brahman breed using Mcheck genetics, slowly growing a group of small prospects into a productive herd of Brahman cattle.

“I am particularly proud of Juniors like Ryan who remain involved after graduation and take advantage of programs that we offer, such as the Junior Breed Back Program, to help him build his herd,” Moreno said.

Moreno concluded by saying that there is no substitute for hard work and he is confident that Beany will do a job second to none serving as this year’s AJBA President.

Congratulations, Ryan!
